An Israeli company called BioExplorers has developed a new and revolutionary way to operate a security checkpoint at airports. They use specially-trained mice that can detect the smell of explosives, drugs, and money!
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The traveler stands in a small booth.A burst of air is sent into the booth. The air is then sent into a separate compartment with eight mice inside. If the mice detect a suspicious smell, they run to another area, called the "reporting compartment."
WHY NOT USE DOGS?
They can be intrusive and sometimes they scare people. Also, mice actually have a more developed sense of smell than dogs.
HOW EFFECTIVE ARE THE MICE?
Very effective! In a test group of over one thousand people, the mice caught all twenty of the test subjects carrying suspicious material.Their performance was better than that of other security methods, such as current airport scanners.
ARE THERE OTHER WAYS TO USE THESE MICE?
Yes!Mice not only make great security guards, but also great doctors!Researchers are working on ways to train mice to detect breast and lung cancer by smelling people's breath!
IS THERE ANYTHING A MOUSE'S NOSE CAN'T DETECT?
Yes, a good mouse trap!
